Boundaries dissolved, timelines bent, distances closed. An Indo Pak love saga.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Dhol began before she even reached the gate. On the Indian side of the Attari Wagah border a small crowd had gathered and at the front stood Sameer Khan waiting for the woman he had loved for five years. After years of distance paperwork and uncertainty Jaweria Khanum was finally about to walk into his life.<\/p>\n

Jaweria had travelled from Karachi with her family’s roots reaching further still to Dera Ismail Khan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. As she finally came into view the dhol grew louder the dancing began and five years of waiting had brought them to the same place.<\/p>\n

Where it started: Germany, 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sameer was studying in Germany when the story properly began though he and Jaweria had already known each other for years. Their families had been connected long before their relationship was which made their story feel like two lives that had quietly been making their way towards one another.<\/p>\n

Meeting was never simple. As a Pakistani citizen and an Indian citizen they could only meet under narrow circumstances with their parents close by. They met three times before deciding to spend their lives together: twice in Thailand and once in Dubai. Those few meetings were enough to give them the certainty to wait for each other.<\/p>\n

The wait: five years, two rejections, and a pandemic<\/strong><\/p>\n

Between those meetings came years of waiting. Jaweria applied for a visa to join Sameer in India and was turned down twice. Then the pandemic arrived and made an already difficult journey even harder.<\/p>\n

For five years they held on to the hope that one day they would not have to meet somewhere else. They would simply be together. When Jaweria finally reached India she expressed her gratitude towards the Indian government for granting her a forty five day stay so their wedding could go ahead.<\/p>\n

Sameer offered a simple thought that captured their journey: borders lost their meaning once the intentions between two people were true.<\/p>\n

A real life Veer and Zaara, arriving years ahead of schedule<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was hard not to think of Veer and Zaara when looking at their story. Sameer and Jaweria had lived their own version of an Indo Pak love story but in five years instead of a lifetime.<\/p>\n

Their reunion had played out with a crowd a dhol player and cameras around them. There had been celebration after years of waiting and a wedding planned for the following month.<\/p>\n

Kolkata, January: where two traditions became one wedding<\/strong><\/p>\n

The wedding took place in the first week of January in Kolkata where Sameer’s family had run their business for generations. It brought together two families two countries and two traditions: Karachi and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on one side and Bengal on the other.<\/p>\n

For Jaweria the occasion carried another layer of emotion. Her parents could not be there to share the preparations or make this new place feel like home. Our role became about more than creating a beautiful setting. We understood that she was celebrating one of the most important moments of her life while the people she loved most were far away. We wanted her home and her traditions to still have a place in the celebration.<\/p>\n

Sameer had said something close to this at the border in the very moment he had waited five years for. It could have stood as the whole point of their story. Sameer and Jaweria had waited five years filled out the paperwork twice lived through a pandemic and finally walked down the aisle together in Kolkata.<\/p>\n

Theirs had been a story of distance but also of choosing each other again and again through every rejection and every delay. And when the waiting finally ended there had been a wedding. There had been two families coming together two traditions finding a place beside each other and two people who had spent five years overcoming every obstacle between them.<\/p>\n

For Jaweria there had also been the absence of her parents. Encore tried to make sure that absence did not define the celebration. Her traditions were brought into the heart of the wedding and the ideas that once existed on a canvas were brought to life around them.<\/p>\n
